“I really put my heart and soul into making those pixel graphics. I’d like it if even people who aren’t familiar with pixel graphics thought ‘Oh, this is what pixel graphics are!’ as they see it and have fun playing it.” (Kazuhiro Tanaka, credited as Max.D, graphics artist, in Famitsu Magazine #1547, 08/09/2018)
Metal Slug: Super Vehicle-001 introduced arcade gamers back in 1996 to the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, the Bayon faces and the Tonle Sap floating villages in gorgeous pixel art. The game was developed by Nazca and published by SNK for the Neo Geo MVS arcade platform and the AES home console.
In the game the player takes on an endless barrage of enemy soldiers, vehicles and deadly contraptions, playing as either Marco or Tarma, in the quest to defeat General Morden and restoring peace on earth. Metal Slug is considered to be one of the best run-and-gun shooters of all time, representing the pinnacle of 90’s pixel art. In the third installment of the series two more Khmer temples can be found (shown below).
Sounds enticing? You can find Metal Slug on most modern consoles, mobile, Steam and GOG for PC/Mac.
